"... "I've gone this far with that streak in the 100 back its somewhat of a blessing," said Peirsol on Tuesday. "If I were 15 I would have said it would have been the 200 [back], now that I'm 25 its the 100 which is so funny for me anyway. It's very cool when it comes to something like our trials this summer, the field is so deep and so many races that no ones really safe, you have to be on your game to just to be able to make the team." ..."

"... THE last night of action at the Texas Senior Circuit meet held in Austin featured a double from Longhorn's Aaron Peirsol. Peirsol claimed titles in the 100 back and 200 IM.
Peirsol crushed the competition in the men's 200 IM with a 2:01.80. Hayes Johnson touched second in 2:04.79, while Longhorn's Bryan Collins took third in 2:06.48.
Peirsol captured his second triumph of the evening with a swift time of 54.72 in the men's 100 back. Dallas Mustang Pontus Renholm placed second in 57.04, while Alan Maher clinched third in 57.51. ..."

"... The Arena X-Glide was one of the high-tech suits that failed to win approval when FINA, the sport's governing body, finally got around to ruling on what's legal and what's not.
"I'm glad I got to wear it once," Peirsol told The Associated Press on Tuesday night. "I wanted to see what all the hullabaloo was about."
Earlier in the day, FINA announced that 202 suits were approved, 10 were rejected and 136 others were sent back to the manufacturers, who have 30 days to return modified designs that comply with new standards on thickness, buoyancy and water resistance.
Peirsol wore the X-Glide at last weekend's Charlotte UltraSwim and defeated Michael Phelps in the 100-meter backstroke. Peirsol was wearing another Arena suit, the Revolution Plus, when he won the 200 back; that suit has been approved by FINA, so he's not concerned.
"Arena has the manpower to adjust to things a little better than those smaller companies," he said. "No matter what, I'm covered." ..."

Although Club Wolverine's Tyler Clary shot down the oldest meet record in the books during prelims, Longhorn's Aaron Peirsol swept the backstroke events with a strong race at night.
Clary posted a 1:59.14 during prelims to shoot down Martin Zubero's 1992 standard of 1:59.62. Peirsol, however, had just a bit more in the tank down the final 20 meters to claim a 1:56.65 to 1:57.05 victory. Both times crushed the meet record.
"You could stay home if they all were going to be easy," Peirsol said about his close race with Clary. "The competition is why we are here. I definitely need to go back and workout a bit more. I am happy with that time for this time of the year."
North Baltimore's Nick Thoman rounded out the top three with a 1:59.62 to match the previous meet record heading into the meet. ..."

"... Men's 100 back
In a star-studded finale, world record holder Aaron Peirsol reminded Michael Phelps just who owns this particular event. Peirsol, swimming for Longhorn, dropped the hammer down the stretch with a swift time of 53.32. Phelps, representing North Baltimore, took second in 53.79 as both backstroke stalwarts beat Ryan Lochte's meet record of 54.00. Lochte, meanwhile, took fourth behind North Baltimore's Nick Thoman, 54.76 to 55.13.
"I am very happy with that swim, it was a good time for this time of year," Peirsol said. "We are trying out all these new suits, and it's kind of bizarre. I wanted to win, but Phelps has been 53.00 before. Nick and Ryan are both good as well, so it was a tough field."
Peirsol, Phelps and Lochte each came into the meet as reigning Olympic gold medalists from Beijing.
"That was a decent time for me," Phelps said. "Aaron and I are always going to have that race. It is fun racing him." ..."
"... Peirsol knew he wanted to return to swimming after Beijing, but he wasn't sure if it would make financial sense to keep going all the way to the 2012 Olympics. That uncertainty was removed when he landed a lucrative contract with European-based swimsuit maker Arena, which hopes to re-establish its presence in the highly-lucrative U.S. market.
Arena, once a major player on this side of the Atlantic with American stars such as Spitz and Matt Biondi, planned to formally announce the deal on Thursday.
"There's some really, really good swimmers struggling to find a way to keep going the next few years financially," Peirsol said. "Arena is a company that left in the mid-90s, but now they've decided to come back into the U.S. market. Actually, it was completely out of the blue. I was surprised they wanted to work with me."
As part of the deal, Peirsol plans to train overseas at least one month out of the year, perhaps in a country where swimming needs a little boost. He also looks forward to working with fellow Arena athletes such as France's Alain Bernard, Brazil's Cesar Cielo and Serbia's Milorad Cavic, who nearly upset Phelps' record-breaking haul in China.
"After many years, our elite team once again sees the participation of a big star of American swimming," said Cristiano Portas, CEO of Arena. "It's difficult to say something that hasn't already been said about Aaron, but I can't make a secret of how much of an impression he made on us." ..."
